Swords Cultural Quarter has been broadly defined as the area in the immediate vicinity of Swords Castle which encompasses County Hall. Following on from the Swords Cultural Quarter Masterplan, various projects are currently under design development. The next phase of conservation works at Swords Castle is progressing including works to increase access to the Chapel building and battlement walks.
Preparations including design and consent processes for a programme of works have started and it is expected that works could start in Q2 2017 subject to consent processes. These works will enhance the Castle as a heritage attraction. The area outside the Castle and on North Street will receive a significant public realm upgrade to provide an attractive civic space outside the Castle. A facilities and services building supporting the cultural and tourism use of the Castle complex is also proposed on North Street. Design work on this is progressing and it is intended to develop the proposal and bring this to develop this to council for planning notice in Q3 2017.
Following on from the public consultation process in relation to the Swords Civic and Cultural Centre initials studies are progressing in relation to the development of a new building to accommodate county library, theatre venue and gallery space on the site of the existing staff car park at junction of Seatown Road and North Street. Detailed briefing is progressing in relation to the requirements and a design team will be appointed early in 2017. The project will be subject to public planning process and a start on site in 2018 is anticipated, subject to funding. It is also intended that the events space within the ground floor of the reconfigured atrium space at County Hall will be used frequently for cultural use and a programme of events is being planned. The identity and branding of Swords Cultural Quarter has been completed and will be used in future marketing and event use.
